“Slow Learners”

1 Corinthians 16:5-6a

After I go through Macedonia, I will come to you -- for I will be going through Macedonia. Perhaps I will stay with you awhile, or even spend the winter...

Thoughts for Today:

In our passage today, Paul makes a very direct statement that it was his intention to return to Corinth. However, at the writing of 2 Corinthians (nearly a year later) it was clear he still hadn't made his way there. Paul gave his explanation in 2 Corinthians 1:23: "I call God as my witness -- and I stake my life on it -- that it was in order to spare you that I did not return to Corinth."

Paul didn't want to spend his time chastising their behavior. So he chose to delay his trip to give them the opportunity to implement the changes he had already given them. Obviously, they were slow to learn. It was also the reason for writing his second letter to the Corinthians -- to clear up a few more matters. Paul wanted his relationship and time spent with them to be pleasant rather than punitive.

Questions to Ponder:

Like so many of us, the Corinthians were slow learners. It took them awhile, and with repeated instructions (the purpose of 2 Corinthians), to get it right. That's a lot like me. Sometimes the lessons the Lord is teaching me take a while to sink in. Praise God that He never gives up! What lessons has God been repeating to you? Are you paying attention? What changes are you working on now?
