1 Corinthians 14:6-7
Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction? Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the flute or harp, how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction in the notes?
When I was a boy and visiting my Grandmother's home in Guymon, Oklahoma, I loved to play her piano. At least that's what I called it. My Grandmother had a different opinion. She would often say to me, "Michael, if you're going to play the piano then play something that sounds good. Don't just bang on it." Now as a grandfather, I often find myself saying the same things to my grandchildren. That is, unless my daughter Amanda is playing. Then what comes out of the same piano (an inanimate object) is absolutely beautiful. Most of us know -- unless there is some sort of distinction and order of notes -- then it's just noise. A banging on the keys.
It's the same point Paul makes in our passage today: What good is tongues unless there is "some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?" Tongues requires interpretation. Paul says, "If I come to you and speak words no one understands, then it would be of no use to you. It would be the same as if random notes were played on a musical instrument." It would just be noise -- and not very pleasant or beneficial.
Are you out of tune? Are you banging on the piano thinking it is music when it's just noise to everyone else? Who is in charge of your spiritual gift? Is it the Lord? The Lord always plays a perfect melody. Are you in harmony with Him?
