“What is Your Exit Plan When Dealing with Temptation?”

1 Corinthians 6:20a

You were bought at a price...

Thoughts for Today:

I remember one summer, when as a young man, I was asked by my mother to knock down a wasp nest under the eve of the second story of our home. I got the ladder out, a long pole, and climbed up to the roof. When I prodded the nest, dozens of angry wasps emerged, stirred into action to search out and punish their antagonist. I dropped the pole and ran for my life. In my haste I lost my footing and fell from the roof. Luckily I suffered no broken bones -- just a lot of wasp stings. Obviously my plan to deal with the wasp nest was flawed. Almost fatally. The same is true for most Christians when dealing with the temptation of sin.

Previously, in verse 18, Paul told us to "flee" sexual immorality. Today he gives us one more reason: "You were bought and paid for with the blood of Jesus." But to where or whom should we flee? As most of us know from our own experiences of figuratively "falling off the roof", fleeing without a destination in mind or an exit plan in place is potentially disastrous. Paul provides the solution for us in his letter to Timothy (2 Timothy 2:22): "Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart."

In other words, we are to flee to other Christians -- those who with a pure heart call on, and walk with the Lord. When we seek to distance ourselves from temptation, running to fellowship with other believers who love the Lord should be our only exit plan.

Questions to Ponder:

Where do you go when dealing with temptation? Is it to the church or somewhere else? Nothing is more rewarding than fellowship with other believers. Is there distance in your Christian relationships? Take a step to reconnect today.
