“Happiness: Don't Do the Things We Know We Shouldn't”

Romans 14:22b

Blessed is the man who does not condemn himself by what he approves.

Thoughts for Today:

Have you ever looked back on something you've said or done and hated yourself for doing it? That is our conscience condemning us. In other words, regardless of what justifications we might have, or how many people were doing it also, for us personally was wrong. It's the difference between a non-Christian who goes out one evening and gets drunk, and a Christian who does the same thing. The non-Christian gets up the next morning with a headache, and says, "That sure was a good time!" Then begins to plan the next night's activities. The Christian wakes up with an equal hangover, yet falls to his knees and cries out to God, "Forgive me Lord. I hate myself -- I don't ever want to do that again!" He confesses his sins to God.

Remember the parable of the Prodigal Son from Luke 15:11-32? He too found himself in a position he didn't enjoy. However, there is no record of his return to the pigpen. He didn't like it there -- it's the difference between a believer and a non-believer. The King James translation of our passage today is: "Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth." In other words, "Don't do the things you know you shouldn't and you will be a lot happier!"

Questions to Ponder:

Are you a little unhappy today? Have you been getting down on yourself because of sin you keep repeating? Doesn't it seem as if the harsher we are on ourselves (and the worse we feel), then the more susceptible we become to the next stumble? It's a spiritual law at work: Condemnation does not lead to righteousness -- only forgiveness will. God's forgiveness has the power to redeem. Will you seek Him now?
